Try turning down your gamma a little.
A friend of mine dyed a wand and all he got was like 3 pixels of color on the shaft of his tool. Pretty pathetic.

What, do you expect it to put on a firework show for you?
Even if it did look nice, I wouldn't add dye to a weapon. Ever. Your weapons change incredibly fast, unlike armour, which changes about every five levels.
You shouldn't waste money on something that won't last more then a few days.

I don't see what the huge deal is with dye. Sure, it's nice, but some people really go overboard. I have my clothes dyed and even my weapon dyed, but all that was dye I just found. I haven't bought a vial yet . Besides, the price of dye is insane. At the trader today, black dye was up around 1900, when a day or so ago it was 1600. IMO, it's not really worth it.

It's not anywhere near worth it, whenever I need dye I just create a new character and run about killing all the devourers in that cave where whats his face gets the devourer eggs real early on pre-searing, I found 6 black dye and 3 silver dye along with some miscellaneous other colors there in a day. Not bad for a days work if you ask me, dyes are common, especially pre-searing, I just then go post-searing and trade it over. Not a penny spent and I got what I wanted.

Some of us are fashion-conscious adventurers. I remember back in DAoC I spent more time and money playing with different armor and color combinations than actually playing. I've still got the screens around somewhere.
And then there was SWG...
If I'm going to die a violent, bloody, but totally heroic death, I'm gonna look damn cool doing it.

EXACTLY!
I was completely disappointed in the appearance of the Mesmer male character. How can I expect to be badass when I'm dressed for a dinner party? It's going to take some intense dye selection to fix this...

It's just the way mesmers think... I COULD wear armor that actually protects me from being murdered by the countless angry foes I'll surely face, but what if Rurik invites me over for dinner?
Plus, the mesmer dance is pretty metrosexual too.

At least it's not blantantly gay like the oiled-up-in-leather-and-chains warriors

Oh? But that's what being Mesmer is about! Mesmers are usually the creme de la creme of society. I mean look at Rurik's late wife? How many nobles do you know with their own theatre? (Having a troupe playing for you and actually owning the theatre is a different thing).
I personally like Mesmer's clothing: in fact, I chose a male Mesmer mainly because of his suit. I needed Fast Casting for my elementalist secondary too, but I just wanted to look different from those "I can kill you by ____ looking at you" jokers.

I actually found 2 blacks and 2 silvers in pre-searing. This is how it turned out on my mezmer.

Hey I like my Lords of the Dance Irish Jig thing. The women flock to that sort of thing.

The main set of clothes I'm not fond of for the mesmer is the rogue's vest or whatever, that tight tiny little purple piece of crap, I mean seriously, that isn't dressy or...anything, it's just crap.
As a whole though it's just the mesmer's style, and I like it. It adds some character to the battlefield. "If I'm to die, I'm going to die well dressed." sort of thing. And the imposing mask does make them look a lot better. And if you dye it all red/black/silver and what not, (combinations of or one of the three) it can look pretty cool. Right now my guy looks like:
Not absolutely terrible. Better than the original that's for sure, now if only I wouldn't be hopping out of that armor in the next few hours I'd use some more dyes on it.
Go mesmer!

Your character ended up looking pretty nice PieXags. He has a kind of Evil-Pirate-Psycho thing going.
